Final Reflection

In my thinking, I have studied a lot of in Writing 5 such as how to write Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect, and Argument Essay. Moreover, I know how to write direct quotes and paraphrased in each essay. Especially, I also know write counterargument and refutation paragraph. I think in English 1301, I have to spend more time to search information and use it like evidence to make my points are stronger. In addition, my grammar errors such as fragments, run-on, subject and verb decrease than before. The new methods that I enhance by using conjunctions when we have the same subject or different subjects. I think the most important things that I learned writing essay logically without fewer mistakes because I can use the different type of essay to write my reports of other classes for next semester. After taking the writing class in this semester, I can recognize a type of prompts and give suitable decisions in order to write a good essay. However, I think I have to study more hard, I will use some skills which I get from my professor to keep going on improving my writing skill. I should spend more time to read other essays and practice them by writing as I can. As you know, writing plays very important roles in our students’ lives. Students have to study English, and they have to write many different essays to submit their homework. Therefore, writing is necessary for students, and I think I have to try my best to improve my writing. Anyway, Thanks to Bonnie, our class have a lot of knowledge, and funny and meaningful activities. Best wishes for Bonnie and your family, and all my classmates.

Experience in Writing Center

In my opinion, I like both face to face and online tutor. Both of them are good, but I prefer face to face. Because if I take face to face tutor, I will know how does my essay. Moreover, my time will be flexible as well as I can make an appointment depends on my time, and I can ask directly tutor about either topics or problems which I do not really understand or which is the best solution I should put some information in my essay. However, the distance from my house to school is a master. In the other hand, if I used an online tutor, I can stay at home and sent email for tutor help me to correct my essay. Unlike, If the deadline near the holidays and the tutor cannot read it. It means I have a lot of troubles in my essay. Therefore, using both two methods are good for students because I have many changes to corrects my essays’ mistakes. In the future, I will use writing center to help me correct my essay and applying both methods in order to achieve my goals. Writing center is really helpful for students in general and me in particular. I think I should study hard about how to write an essay without the mistake of word choices, grammar, and functions. 

Writing Journal

I used to write journals before for other writing classes. I used to write journals in Writing 4. It is a simple topic because you just write one topic in every week. The topic is writing your thinking and feeling about your week which you have just spent. Right now, while studying in writing 5, I am so interested in activities in class. In Writing 5^th of class, I write a lot more than other classes. In the first time, I am so stressed about writing a blog because I am not confidence in writing. However, this is easier because the blog does require about grammar, spelling, word choices, and students just do and submit it.  Moreover, the topics are diversity and broad, and they make me feel interesting when the topics ask and share about educational experiences. Therefore, writing blogs gradually become my favorites. The blogs look like a bridge such as a feedback to connect between students, their friends, and teachers. In my opinions, the blog assignment should require students have at least 2 comments each week. It helps the students have a habit of writing, and it makes students familiar with English. If students did not have to comment, it is very difficult for students because they do not have feedbacks from their friends. The comments help students know how their classmate more and create a sense of community in the classroom. In addition, they can study experiences from their classmate. It is a short time to find right ways to study English. Actually, in the first time, I was so tired to write a blog of every week. It made me waste a lot of time to think and write, but right now I am so interested in the blog. Writing blogs such as habit to help me connect English and my friends in the classroom. Furthermore, It helps me understand the way of my friends get succeed in English. I really like writing blogs in this class. Thank our sweet Bonnie. 

Blog #10

Following to www.wordsandphrase.info, in my blog entry, it tells me have 75% of 1 – 500, 15% of 501 – 300, and 10% of >3000. This information make me extremely surprise because I never seen it before. It makes me enormously happy and excited because it helps me to improve writing skill, and I can study it by myself. I would like to change regarding the vocabulary used in my writing because it help me how to write essay by using academic vocabulary. This is the program which I look for to help me improve my skills. Actually, I am so stressful while writing an essay. I often go the writing center or ESOL to help me improve my essay, but I think this programs help me more than all of them because it give me all information, each word have many functions and give me many solutions to build up my vocabulary. I am exceedingly happy to study writing. Thank to Bonnie help me to exit my fearfulness. 

Sex Roles

In my opinion, both biology and culture are more important in shaping gender role. For example, according to “Hormones may also have an impact on certain differences in brain function, Jerre Levy of the University of Chicago has found differences in the way male and female brains are organized. In Levy’s view, men’s brains may give them an advantage in verbal skills. Men are therefore better at dealing with abstract concepts; women are more effective in picking up information from the surrounding environment about people, sounds, and so forth.” Moreover, following to Deborah Tannen, girls often plays small groups, and they spend a lot of time to talk, share, their stories to best friends. Girls feel close to each other. In the other hand, the boy tends to play with large groups, they often negotiate and try to be a leader (pp 4,5). Not only biology but also culture contribute the difference personalities between man and women. It shows the diversity characters between male and female. 

Life in the future

I used to think about my life in the future, but until now it is a dubious scheme. Medical major is my favorite because I would like to take care and help everyone overcome the physical pain and I will establish the goal for coming period. However, in order to achieve that purpose, I have to experience the challenges and risks such as shocked culture as well as language. As you know, languages play an important role in all position and it is a tool to leading to the succeed of the people. This means I have to listen, speak, read, and write in English fluently. It is extremely difficult for me because I have just come here for two years, and my native language is not English. I am so stressful while I study English. However, I recognize that English is a language, so I should imitate the way that they communicate and write through practicing and reading books. These are the best ways to become a success. Then I can speak and hear well so that I feel more confident. I think I will keep carrying out my plans, and majors which I adore it. Moreover, I should subdivide the immediate mission that I can do in the short period time, and effort to finish them on my schedule. After that, I will move on to the next task in order to the routine was the same every day, with nothing to relieve the monotony. Finally, I hope I can do it well, reach my dream and target.

Library habit

Library

I have a student ID, so I also have a library card because it is in my students ID.  I often go to the library after I finish my class on an alternating day. The differences between libraries in the USA and in my country is the USA’s libraries is bigger than Vietnam’s ones. Moreover, fewer conference facilities and tools lead to the disadvantage of Vietnam’s libraries such as books, conditions, technologies, spaces, and activities club for study. In Vietnam, libraries are not only located in universities but also located in towns. Although people want to get as much as professional knowledge as from many sources like the Internet or social networking, using the library is an impossible mission. I really like libraries in the USA because they have good environments to focus, a lot of books to study, high technologies to research. Moreover, there are many activities in the library at Lone Star such as Academic Success Center, Book Club, Computer Workshops, ESL Outreach (Talk time), Job & career Workshops, Life: Learning, Inspiration, Fellowship, and enrichment, Spanish Conversation Club, etc. Especially, in Academic Success Center, a lot of tutor for each major like Math, English, Physical, Biology help students understand their subjects which they get problems while they study.  Overall, the success of students always has the companionship of the Academic Success Center.

Reading habits

My reading habits have changed over the years. As a child i had more time to read than an adult. because i just studied and read books after school. even though my reading habit preferences have changed long time ago, i still enjoy it as much as i was a child. I read almost every night before i go to sleep because i can imagine the stories that i read and easy to fall asleep. Either i read by paper or e-book. It depends on my convenience where i am and what i get such as reading book in the library and e-book in publics. i always find everything to read like fiction, biographies as well as spiritual books, sometimes, i surf social networking to read someone’s short story and their sharing. In my home language i often read information relating to the life and health because i want to access the information existing and impacting to my relatives directly. Beside in English i loved reading fictional books and i believe it was because i had such a creative imagination of my own as well as i could draw a picture in my mind everything that i read.

Think about the writing classes

All the writing in my life has gotten a lot of experiences. It is also really difficult things for the person without literacy skills like me because of poor memories, I could not get more ideas as well as structures of the writing for my own writing. In the first of essay, I had scored C with many teacher’s comments, of course, I was really sad and disappointed in myself. More disappointed when teacher’s feedback complained about incoherent sentences and bad handwriting. However, I did not give up and quickly forgot these mistakes as soon as possible, moreover, I read as much as books, taking notes for my own words. Honestly, thanks to teacher’s feedback, I could understand my own shortcomings and correct it. In my opinion, The most helpful feedback that I think is detailed comments as well as references. Nevertheless, there is a few problematic feedback like no comment or short comments because I could not recognize my weakness besides I could not get teacher’s knowledge that conveyed for me.

Culture Shock

In my situation, I got a lot of experienced “culture shock” in the United States. Because I came from the developing country, so the main means of transport is motorbike and wheels are just for the rich. However, when I came to the United States, my first surprise is that most of the people traveled by car, so motorbikes are really rare. As a result, I had taken 2 months for practicing in order to drive a car because of three times fall. The big challenges and problems that I had to face were the language barrier. Although I was learned English when I was a child, I cannot speak and listen as a native person until now. I do not know how to learn as fluency as the native person, but I will study day by day and step by step to enhance my skills. Welfare benefits and food safety was wonderful in the US that I did not expect before I came here. And I applied to college, I was directed to receive financial aid from the state. Moreover, the food in the US is really fresh and clear origin. In my opinion,  Genetically-Modified foods are no longer produce in the US because there may be risks involved in the genetic engineering of foods.

My Strategies

Firstly, my strategies are studying and searching from many resources from teacher and internet beside I attempt to spend one hour reading basic daily and noting main meaning in order to apply to next certain case. Moreover, before complete a writing such article or essay, I am going to leave ten minutes for checking out and editing at least, for instant I will check my grammar as well as structure of sentences. After that I will read my drafts out loud or silently that it depends on the place where I am because if I am in library, reading out lout is impossible. I prefer reading out loud to silently to myself because I can listen to my voice so as to correct pronunciation, intonation as well. Online resources are the main information that I got knowledge to answer and investigate questions about language because of abundance. However, I will consider to refine the reliable and accurate comment.  Sometimes, I combine studying with relaxing by listening to music or watching television, I think this strategy is really work for me because while rest time, I can still learn by myself and enhance my skills.

The important role of language

My home language is Vietnamese and as the result of Vietnamese emigration and cultural influence. Because of borrowing from Chinese, after that it was modified set of Chinese characters called “chữ nôm” so it is really diversity, abundance as well as complicated. I once copied a sentence from a book on the essay but I misunderstood meaning, as a consequence it made my whole paragraph become laughable. I had to learn how to write an essay when I was a child, beside, literature as a compulsory subject from primary to high school so I had to struggle with writing. Nevertheless, my favorite subjects are physics, science and mathematic. And no surprise that I always got B with every writing test. With my experiences, if you want to get A with Vietnamese writing, you should write long and combine with complex sentence. As well as English, Vietnamese reading is one of the skills that support for writing a lot.
